Hunger and obesity often occur within the same populations -- even the same families. ? Both hunger and obesity can be consequences of low income and the resulting lack of access to enough nutritious food. ? Research shows that participation in the federal nutrition programs can combat both hunger and obesity.
Bridging the Gap: Research Informing Practice and Policy for Healthy Youth Behavior was designed to improve the understanding of the role of public policy and environmental factors in youth alcohol, illicit drug, and tobacco use, as well as diet and physical activity, to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing substance use and obesity among youth. The research program was intended to close gaps in understanding the most important policy, environmental, and programmatic strategies for reducing youth substance.
SPARK is a research-based organization that disseminates evidence-based Physical Education, After School, Early Childhood, and Coordinated School Health programs to teachers and recreation leaders serving Pre-K through 12th grade students. Each SPARK program strives to foster environmental and behavioral change by providing a coordinated package of highly active curriculum, on-site teacher training, extensive follow-up support, and content-matched pe equipment. Since 1989, SPARK has provided curriculum materials, teacher training, and consultation to over 100,000 teachers and youth leaders, representing many thousands of schools, organizations, and agencies worldwide.
Since 1993, The OrganWise Guys, Inc. has partnered with a variety of public and private entities to bring science-based nutrition, physical activity, and other lifestyle behavior messages to children. Their specialty is combining a depth of knowledge of the research on nutrition and preventative health care practices with creative, attention-getting, curriculum-linked resources that challenge listeners to change their behavior.
A collaboration with the National Football League, ReCharge! helps kids in grades 2-6 learn about nutrition and physical activity through fun, teamwork-based activities that help meet National Health Education Standards - before, during, or after school.

This handy online tool provides step-by-step guidance, best practice examples and resources to create a local wellness policy; put the policy into action; and measure its success against goals to improve student health and learning.
Students have a right to a healthy school! Students Taking Charge is a national program from Action for Healthy Kids for high school students to learn, join and take action to make their schools healthier places and to help themselves and their peers learn to eat right and be active every day.
NFL Play 60 is the League's initiative promoting young fans to get active for at least 60 minutes every day. The campaign is raising awareness around the importance of health and wellness to our young fans and has become the primary focus for the NFL. The NFL has committed to this cause across the League and has aligned messaging to help promote the positive benefits of physical activity and healthy lifestyle.
TAKE 10! is a classroom-based physical activity program for kindergarten to fifth grade students.
California Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition) (CPL) is a joint program of the California Department of Public Health and the Public Health Institute focusing on youth empowerment, policy and environmental change strategies, and community-based solutions. CPL's mission is to increase healthy eating and physical activity to reduce the prevalence of obesity and chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, and diabetes.
Peaceful Playgrounds focuses on introducing children and school staff to the many choices of activities available on playgrounds and field areas. This website provides valuable resources and information including newsletters, grants, and other kits and activities for school and community members.
Safe Routes to School programs enable community leaders, schools and parents across the United States to improve safety and encourage more children to safely walk and bicycle to school. In the process, programs are working to reduce traffic congestion and improve health and the environment, making communities more livable for everyone.
We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition), a past partner of AFHK, is a science-based national education program developed by the National Institutes of Health a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ─ to help children ages 8-13 stay at a healthy weight through improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time. We Can! offers curricula; resources for parents and youth, including tip sheets and tools; guidance on partnership outreach, participant recruitment, and retention; and technical assistance/training, designed to enable communities and partners to adapt the program to fit their specific needs.
Since its inception in 1956, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has helped motivate millions of people to be physically active each year. What began as a national youth fitness initiative has grown into the President's Challenge, a national initiative that encourages all Americans to make being active and fit part of their everyday lives. As a way to motivate and reward youth and adults for being physically active on a regular basis, the Active Lifestyle Award Program challenges adults to get physically active for 30 minutes per day, and challenges children to get active for 60 minutes per day. As they track their physical activity and reach their goals, participants become eligible for rewards and presidential awards such as certificates, patches and medals. There's also an option for using a pedometer to track daily activity.
Team Nutrition is an initiative of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to support the Child Nutrition Programs through training and technical assistance for foodservice, nutrition education for children and their caregivers, and school and community support for healthy eating and physical activity.
CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) is an evidence-based, coordinated school health program designed to promote physical activity and healthy food choices, and prevent tobacco use in children from preschool through grade 8. The program is currently being implemented in over 7,500 schools and after-school programs across the United States and Canada.
Fuel Up to Play 60 is the in-school nutrition and physical activity program founded by National Dairy Council? (NDC) and the National Football League, based on a mutual commitment to the health of the next generation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has joined the effort as well as many businesses and industry leaders.This comprehensive program focuses on promoting healthier eating and more physical activity opportunities schoolwide. Students and adults work together to select and implement a series of "Plays" that result in long-term changes in these two important areas. Along the way, students become empowered to lead ? by making healthy decisions, taking action for change and encouraging their friends to do the same.
The Children's Health Market is proud to introduce THE GREAT BODY SHOP, a nationally recognized comprehensive health and substance abuse prevention program used by preschool, elementary and middle schools throughout the US. The program meets all state and national standards, is affordable, easy to teach, and provides an educational environment in which it is enjoyable to learn.
This is one powerful and unique program that makes it easy for schools to help youth and their families learn to eat healthy and be active every day. Game On! features fun activities, or "challenges" to help schools and students Eat Better and Move More. Best of all, Game On! helps increase awareness and leads to behavior changes that positively impact health and achievement.
A coordinated school health program (CSHP) model consists of eight interactive components. Schools by themselves cannot - and should not - be expected to solve the nation's most serious health and social problems. Families, health care workers, the media, religious organizations, community organizations that serve youth, and young people themselves also must be systematically involved. However, schools could provide a critical facility in which many agencies might work together to maintain the well-being of young people.
