Unveiling Our New Strategic Plan for a Healthier Future

Imagine a world in which every child, regardless of where they live or their economic background, has the opportunity to thrive—physically, emotionally, and academically. Now, imagine the transformative power of schools being harnessed to make this vision a reality. At Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK), we’re not just imagining this future—we’re helping to build it on a strong foundation we’ve been developing with our school partners for years.

Our Strategic Direction: Scaling Impact for Lasting Change

Our new strategic plan is centered around a transformative vision: to elevate schools as catalysts for change, empowering them to serve the comprehensive health needs of children and adolescents. While our plan introduces the National School District Health and Wellness Impact Network, which we’re going to share much more about in the weeks and months to come, it’s important to note that this is not the beginning of our journey. We’re building on the solid groundwork laid by our National School District Wellness Coalition, which has been at the forefront of promoting child health and wellness in schools across the country for many years.

We’re thrilled to announce that our efforts have garnered the support of a new lead sponsor, Kaiser Permanente, who shares our commitment to advancing health equity and promoting holistic wellness in schools. This partnership is a significant milestone for our Coalition, as it strengthens our ability to provide the resources, expertise, and support necessary to make a lasting impact.

The National School District Wellness Coalition has provided us with invaluable insights, partnerships, and successes that will guide the expansion of our work. The new Impact Network is designed to scale these proven models of holistic child health and wellness, ensuring that every district we partner with has the tools, resources, and support needed to make a meaningful impact.

Our approach emphasizes upstream interventions—targeting the root causes of health inequities that disproportionately affect socially, culturally, and economically diverse communities. By addressing systemic barriers and unequal access to resources, we are working toward a future where health equity is not just an aspiration but a reality for all children.

Key components of our strategic plan include:

  • Building Capacity: We are committed to equipping school stakeholders—educators, administrators, health professionals, and families—with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to implement high-impact health and wellness programs.
  • Strategic Partnerships: We recognize the power of collaboration and are forming partnerships with public health and education agencies, community organizations, policymakers, and advocates to create a unified platform for child health.
  • Data-Driven Strategies: Our commitment to evidence-based approaches ensures that our interventions are effective and tailored to the unique needs of each community. By collecting and analyzing data, we continuously refine our strategies and advocate for the integration of health and wellness into educational policies and systems.

This strategic plan is not just a roadmap—it’s a declaration of our values in action, guiding us toward a future where every child is supported in pursuing their own healthy future.
