Giving Students a Greener Place to Learn

Windsor Hills Elementary & Middle School
Baltimore, MD

On November 12, 2017, CSX Transportation, Action for Healthy Kids and City Year teamed up to beautify the 92 year-old Windsor Hills Elementary and Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland. Volunteers worked to renovate the cafeteria and first floor, including painting inspirational quotes, murals and the Baltimore skyline. Outside, volunteers built an outdoor classroom and planters, painted playground graphics and planted 52 trees. Thanks to their hard work, more classes will be held outside among greenery.

“The Windsor Hills Community is blown away by the volunteer turn-out and beautification as part of the CSX and Action for Healthy Kids day of service event. It is amazing what can be done when organizations, schools, businesses and the community combine forces to work toward a common goal of making our school communities brighter,” said Principal Corey Basmajain. “The work that was done on November 12th is a game-changer in terms of providing our students with the space and environment that they deserve to learn in each and every day. I can’t wait to see the look on the students’ faces when they come up the path on Monday morning at 7:30am!”

The school beautification is just another step in promoting health and wellness at Windsor Hills. The school is also a Game On grant recipient, thanks to support from CSX Transportation. The grant allowed the school to work with BMore Fit, an organization that provides on-site fitness coaches and teacher trainings to increase student physical activity as well as integrate nutrition education in class.

From the school enhancements to the improvements in school wellness, Windsor Hills is giving students more of what they deserve – a safe and healthy place to learn and grow.
