Celebrating School Lunch Heroes
What makes a hero?
On National School Lunch Hero Day, we celebrate YOU and all the school lunch heroes who work tirelessly every day to provide nutritious meals to students. While you may not wear a superhero cape, we celebrate the heroic work you do that often goes unrecognized.
Action for Healthy Kids celebrates school lunch heroes like you:
Curious how to celebrate with your team of school lunch heroes? Let’s hear from districts as they celebrate their team of heroes.
Celebrate your school lunch heroes by investing in them:

“Invest in your staff, work on getting them training, work on building their confidence and then the rest will fall into place.”
– Leah Botko, Food Service Director, Littleton Public School District (Littleton, MA)
“…invest in your team. If you are able to invest in them, have them have the opportunities to grow within the organization, they’ll rally behind you.”
– Lorena Lara, Senior Manager of Nutrition Services, Wonderful College Prep Academy-Lost Hills (Lost Hills, CA)
“25% of our team is now certified through a culinary program…That was one of the biggest innovations in investing in our own people, that way they can do the program that we were hoping or envisioning to provide for our students.”
– Devinder Kumar, Senior Director of Student Health and Wellness, Wonderful College Prep Academy-Lost Hills (Lost Hills, CA)
Celebrate your school lunch heroes by acknowledging their efforts:

“We can have the fresh ingredients, we can have the equipment…but the staff is very important. If we don’t have the staff trained and acknowledged with all these new scratch items, this wouldn’t be as successful.”
-Nanci Miramontes, Chef Manager, Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District (Newman, CA)
“The staff has been fabulous. And they always want to make new things and try different things for the children, because that’s why they’re there. They love the kids. They want to make them happy.”
-Nadine Doucette, Director of Food Service, Whitman-Hanson Regional School District (Whitman, MA)
Celebrate your school lunch heroes by having fun!
“If you make it fun, if you joke with people, you laugh..that’s what makes us all get through the day.”
-Katie Corey, Central Kitchen Lead, Selah School District 119 (Selah, WA)
Hats off to all of these school lunch heroes, leading the way in school nutrition!
