About the National School District Wellness Coalition

The National School District Wellness Coalition unites more than 80 school districts from across the country in a national community of practice dedicated to strengthening and sustaining student health and wellness. Through shared learning, collaboration, and practical resources, the Coalition supports districts in creating healthier school environments where every student can thrive.

The National School District Wellness Coalition is committed to helping school districts inform, coordinate, enhance, and measure the development and implementation of Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC)–related practices and policies through a collective impact model to ensure students and staff are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged, and to drive a national education agenda that supports the whole child.

District leaders are the catalysts for this change—reimagining education systems, driving bold action, and championing policies and practices that put health at the heart of learning.

How We’re Supporting District Leaders

To support district leaders in implementing a whole child educational framework, Action for Healthy Kids launched the Urban School Wellness Coalition (USWC) in 2013. This original coalition brought together 33 of the country’s largest school districts, where key decision makers convened regularly as a community of practice to share peer-approved best practices and advance urban school wellness.

In 2020, Action for Healthy Kids expanded this effort beyond urban districts to include leaders from communities of all sizes and geographies, creating a unique opportunity for districts to learn from one another, share successes and challenges, and accelerate progress toward healthier schools for all students. This expanded coalition became the National School District Wellness Coalition, which now includes more than 80 school districts and over 240 members nationwide – with new districts joining every year. The Coalition works to translate the WSCC framework into actionable, realistic policies, programs, and practices—helping all districts, regardless of size or location, implement wellness strategies that are scalable and sustainable.

Through monthly virtual meetings, annual in-person convenings, and ongoing peer-to-peer engagement, the Coalition empowers district leaders to build healthier school environments and create lasting change in their communities.

District leaders are shaping the future of school wellness—turning shared goals into meaningful action that creates learning environments where every child can achieve optimal health and well-being.

Kids need health. Health needs action. Action needs you!
