Movin' Outside
Wooten Elementary School, Austin ISD, TexasDescription
This project was designed to increase physical activity in an outside environment by developing natural play areas and an outdoor classroom areas to encourage teachers to be outside more frequently. Community needs are also being considered and addressed.
Impact
This project is on-going. Phase I included putting in a walking trail this past summer. Phase II involves foliage, planting gardens, features for the children such as hills, windmill, logs and rocks. Due to drought conditions in Texas, until recent rains, we were unable to begin gardens. This will begin in Spring. Just putting in the trail has increased usage of the park. We met a lady and her dog on their first visit. She was very excited about the changes. We have been featured in a - soon to be released - book on children's play by UT Professor, Dr. Joe Frost, and recognized by the Austin Children in Nature Group. We have collaborated with the City of Austin, Austin Parks Foundations, Wooten Neighborhood Association, Boy Scouts, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Austin Green Art and of course staff and parents at Wooten Elementary School.
