Implementation Tool
Although USDA studies indicate that schools are improving in meeting the USDA nutrition standards, many school meals are still high in saturated fat, sodium, and offer a limited variety of healthy foods
While school meals are generally considered healthy, as they must meet USDA guidelines, improvements can still be made. USDA is in the process of reviewing current meal patterns and nutrient standards, and updating standards for school meals to ensure they meet the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans but many school districts are moving forward and making positive changes on their own. Food service operators are key to bringing about menu changes and must be part of the solution. Consider forming "Menu Advisory Teams" that include school food service staff, students, other school staff and parents to enhance menu offerings. There are a number of tools and resources available to help with these efforts.
