Evaluation tools

Throughout the ReCharge! kit, tools are available to help you determine the success of implementing this program, whether you implement one or all of the ReCharge! activities.

ReCharge! Student Exit Survey – Collects feedback from students on how they feel about ReCharge! and how the program has impacted them. This one-page survey asks students about their satisfaction with the program and the program staff; and the impact of the program on their eating, physical activity and goal-setting behavior. The results of this survey can be shared with key stakeholders such as school administrators, staff and parents and can be used by program staff to help make improvements in future programs. This survey can be used by providers who implement all or just certain ReCharge! activities.

Student Pre- and Post- Surveys & Parent Surveys – For those providers who are implementing the complete ReCharge! program and wish to evaluate their program more fully, the following tools are available:

  • Student Pre-Survey and Post-Survey, measuring change in students knowledge, attitudes and behaviors around healthy eating, physical activity and goal-setting.
  • Parent Survey, assessing parents' knowledge and perceptions of ReCharge!, including how the program has impacted their children.
  • ReCharge! Provider Exit Survey – For ReCharge! users who have implemented all or pieces of the curriculum. Take the opportunity to tell us what you thought of the kit, the materials, the website and more. This feedback is very important as we look to enhance the curriculum with each reprint and ways to expand the program.

Energy In – Energy Out Tracker

The "Energy In-Energy Out" Tracker is an easy, motivating tool to help build your students' awareness of their own nutrition and physical activity choices — and to track and celebrate their successes along the way. Throughout the ReCharge! program, you'll see the tracker icon as a reminder for students to use the tracker.

  • Students track "Energy In" by making at least three healthy nutrition choices each day from a list they are given.
  • Students track "Energy Out" by being physically active for 60 minutes a day at least five days a week.
  • Students should use the tracker for at least one week and, ideally, up to six weeks.

Tracking "Energy In"

To help customize the "Energy In" Tracker for your students' grade, knowledge or ability, three versions are provided, each with a different list of healthy choices. See Tips for Tracking Energy In for ideas.

  • Rookie Tracker (PDF) is the simplest version of the Tracker. Students are presented with five healthy nutrition choices, one from each of the Five Food Groups. The Rookie Tracker is introduced and explained in Activity 5 – Five Food Groups Search & Rescue.
  • Veteran Tracker (PDF) is ideal to introduce in Activity 10 – Intercepting Nutritious Snacks, as students' knowledge about healthy nutrition choices builds. In the Veteran Tracker, students are presented with eight healthy nutrition choices, each corresponding to content covered through Activity 10.
  • All-Pro Tracker (PDF) is the most advanced and specific tracker, in which students can choose from seven healthy eating goals that they can determine for themselves. This tracker asks students to make specific choices about food groups and numbers of servings, so should be used with students who are comfortable with, and ready for these concepts. The All-Pro Tracker is introduced and explained in Activity 13 – Triple Pass and Score.

Tracking "Energy Out"

The "Energy Out" Tracker is the same for everyone! To track "Energy Out," Action for Healthy Kids and the National Football League teamed up with the President's Challenge, which asks kids to be physically active for 60 minutes each day for at least five of the seven days in each week. Students can choose the activities they like doing — whether it's at home, at school, alone or with friends and family. See Tips for Tracking Energy Out (PDF) for ideas.

Objectives

Students participate in a variety of fun, teamwork-oriented activities throughout the ReCharge! program. As an extra incentive, they also learn valuable life skills about healthy eating, physical activity and setting nutrition and physical activity goals. In total, students participating in ReCharge! will:

  • Learn how and why to eat healthy and be physically active – and believe in the benefits of these healthy behaviors.
  • Practice healthy habits – by eating healthy snacks and engaging in physical activity in their after-school program.
  • Develop transferable life skills – including healthy eating, physical activity, teamwork and goal-setting – that they can apply outside the after-school environment.

Goalpost objectives

At the forefront of the Student Activities section, you will notice a grid showing each activity name and number, accompanied by a description, activity objectives, and which key areas (nutrition, physical activity, goal-setting and/or teamwork) that activity addresses (Activity Overview and Downloadable Activity Overview). Each activity also lists its respective objectives under the Goalpost Objectives area. These learning objectives reflect what knowledge, skills and attitudes your students may acquire once they have completed each activity. View this list organized by knowledge, attitudes, and skills to:

  • Explore, at a glance, the key objectives ReCharge! addresses.
  • Communicate program objectives to staff and key stakeholders.
  • Evaluate the ReCharge! program by understanding the key objectives the program addresses.
