National Football League
The partnership between the National Football League (NFL) and Action for Healthy Kids began in 2003, when the organizations collaborated to educate and encourage kids across the country to adopt healthy lifestyle choices that center on daily physical activity and good nutrition.
In 2005, the NFL partnered with Action for Healthy Kids to develop ReCharge! Energizing After-School, the first nationally distributed after-school program that fully integrates physical activity and nutrition through fun, teamwork-based activities. The ReCharge! curriculum teaches children in grades 2-6 the importance of daily physical activity and eating healthfully, while participating in fun football-themed activities. Since the initial release back in 2003, the ReCharge! curriculum has been:
-
Distributed to over 10,500 ReCharge! programs, reaching an estimated 650,000 children in grades 2-6.
-
Incorporated into the following settings, but not limited to: after-school programs, summer/day camps, core classrooms for indoor recess, PE classes, In-home daycare settings and Field Day events by community organizers.
-
Directed program users to create a more physically active program experience for the children in their program(s).
In the fall of 2009, Action for Healthy Kids released the 2nd edition ReCharge! kit and has plans to donate 7,500 kits over a three year period to after-school programs that provide service to students in grades 2-6.
In October 2007, the NFL launched NFL Play 60, a national youth health and fitness campaign focused on increasing the wellness of young fans be encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. The NFL Play 60 mission perfectly aligns with the work of Action for Healthy Kids, which led our organizations to collaborate once again to improve the health of kids everywhere through the creation of Mini-ReCharge!, a youth fitness program that is full of energizing activities that get kids on their feet and having fun.
Mini-ReCharge! kits were distributed to each of the 32 NFL Clubs to be implemented in their youth fitness and community programs. During the past two NFL seasons, a total of 33 Mini-ReCharge! events have been held by such NFL Clubs as the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins. The Mini-ReCharge! program has also been implemented by NFL staff at Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and Nickelodeon’s Day of Play events.
