Money, Support for More School Breakfasts

Through their School Breakfast to School Wellness Partnership, Action for Healthy Kids and the Kellogg’s Corporate Citizenship Fund are offering 90 schools a chance to expand their daily breakfast programs. The goal is to increase the number of students who eat school breakfast daily among the schools already participating in the national School Breakfast Program and to encourage teachers, parents and kids to advocate for school breakfast initiatives through Action for Healthy Kids’ core school health programs: Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge and Students Taking Charge.

After all, we know school breakfast benefits kids, families, schools and the community as a whole. Eating that all-important meal helps students improve their math grades, vocabulary skills and memory. And students who eat breakfast come to school, are on time, show decreased behavioral and psychological problems, and have fewer visits to the school nurse.

How the Program Works
School districts will apply for a minimum of three of their primary and/or secondary schools.  Schools (public, charter, private, or religious) may submit an application for a single site. Although applications from all districts and schools will be considered, the School Breakfast to School Wellness Partnership is targeted to those with greater than 50 percent eligibility for free and reduced-price meals.

The award amount will be based, in part, on a school’s ability to mobilize parents and students around school breakfast initiatives. Priority selection will be given to schools with low student breakfast participation and to schools or districts that are nominated by or receive a letter of support from their state Action for Healthy Kids team.

Action for Healthy Kids will provide support in the way of management, expertise and manpower to help the selected schools develop healthy, nutritional breakfast programs.
