Get Going!

To make the most of Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge, you’ll want to plan its launch thoughtfully and to share news of the program throughout the entire community. Press releases, student newspaper articles, letters to parents, announcements at PTA meetings, notices at community centers—all can be used as successful tools for energizing and involving the entire community.

The core of Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge is giving students the opportunity to experience the key concepts they’re learning.

Experience Eat Better Challenges

Action for Healthy Kids research shows that, when you’re helping kids eat better, a successful strategy is to let them taste new and healthy foods. For this reason, a key aspect of Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge is the taste test. Information about hosting successful taste tests – and tasting surveys – can be found in Step 3. Other nutrition-related activities can be held as stand-alone events, can accompany taste test events or can be included as part of a school carnival or health fair. Taste-test ideas specific to of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ “Food Groups to Encourage” are included in the description of nutrition challenges and success stories.

Experience Move More Challenges

Kids spend more time in front of the “screen” – in front of televisions, computers, video games – than any previous generation. This means they need even more encouragement to get up and get moving. Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge lets kids experience the fun and pleasure of moving throughout the day. Ideas for moving at target periods of the day – before school, during and after school – are included in Step 3.

One of the first important tasks in Step 5 is for the team to build awareness of and excitement for Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge, with particular attention to the featured eat better and move more challenges.
