Yes, believe it or not, some students have never tasted a fresh pear. In fact, they are surprised to see that pears come in a shape different than little white cubes like they see in their fruit cocktail!
Having students taste healthy food items is at the heart of Game On! the Ultimate Wellness Challenge. If students try and like healthier foods, they’ll be more likely to continue their healthy eating habits. A very effective tool for giving students this opportunity is through a taste test.
A taste test – or better yet, a series of taste tests – is a great way to reinforce what students are learning about a particular food group. Offering taste tests on one or two days during the challenge can pique student interest, but more frequent tastings will help students eat better over the long term.
There’s no one right way to schedule taste tests – but as the Action for Healthy Kids pilot project discussed at the right – with more exposure comes greater success.
