Roel A. Gonzalez, Vice Chair
Superintendent, Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District, Texas
Roel Gonzalez’s commitment to academic excellence is evident from accomplishments throughout his career. He has served in the roles of teacher, counselor, migrant coordinator, elementary principal, high school principal and now as superintendent of the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) in Texas. Under his leadership, Cano-Gonzalez Elementary, Economedes High School, Edinburg CISD Migrant Program, and Rio Grande City CISD, all received the distinguished honor of exemplary or recognized status from the Texas Education Agency.
Mr. Gonzalez served as a committee member of the Action for Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Summit under the honorary chairperson headship of Mrs. Laura Bush. His initiative for wellness for students in his district has been featured in New York Times Magazine. Understanding the cultural needs of Hispanic, economically disadvantaged children first hand, Mr. Gonzalez addresses the motivational tools required to tackle the inherent barriers present in the lives of his school district’s student population.
He was chosen by the local Education Service Center, Region One as the 2008 Superintendent of the Year. The American Association of School Administrators also named him the 2008 Texas State Superintendent of the Year.
