The Power of Choice: Helping Youth Make Healthy Eating and Fitness DecisionsThis after-school program, jointly developed by the HHS's Food and Drug Administration and USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, targets pre-teens ages 11-13 and offers life skill activities, posters, nutrition fact cards, recipe booklet, leader's guide and more. Sport For AllThis children's physical activity program is a joint partnership of National Association for Sport and Physical Education, Human Kinetics and Sportime. Designed for out-of-school settings, the program offers a series of developmentally based activity modules for children ages 3-10 to help teach basic motor and fitness skills. Power of OneDeveloped by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, this national program helps youth set goals for themselves, create a plan of action and meet their goals. Geared to secondary school students, Power of One resources and strategies help get students involved in mentoring and service learning projects. Media-Smart YouthThis interactive after-school program is designed to help young people ages 11-13 understand the complex media world around them and how it can influence their health — especially in areas related to nutrition and physical activity. Created by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the program's 10 lessons include a culminating "Big Production" project in which youth actually produce a media message for other young people. Physical Activity for Local Students (PALS)Co-published by the National Middle School Association and the Comprehensive Health Education Foundation, this program provides schools and communities with a framework, research-based tools and resources for building a community-school collaboration to increase physical activity opportunities for youth ages 9-13. Action for Healthy KidsThis site provides a comprehensive resource clearinghouse with valuable links, background information and best-practice models for improving children's nutrition and physical activity. The site also includes a Resource Clearinghouse with tools and materials on initiating an after-school program as well as a wealth of information on child health and wellness concerns.
